Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's InterPositive for up to $600M — The Biggest AI Filmmaking Deal in Hollywood History

The streaming giant makes one of the largest acquisitions in its history: buying the stealth AI post-production startup that Oscar-winning director Ben Affleck built in secret over three years — complete with a suite of first-party AI tools validated by David Fincher — and bringing Affleck himself in as a Senior Advisor.

THE PARTIES

ACQUIRER / LEAD INVESTOR

Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX)

Los Gatos, CA-based global streaming leader. Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters. 300M+ paid subscribers. Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria. ~$43B in revenues. Netflix had previously relied primarily on organic capability development and smaller tuck-in acquisitions. Its largest prior deal: the Roald Dahl Story Company ($700M). This acquisition ranks as Netflix's second-largest ever and signals a major shift toward owning AI production tools internally rather than licensing them.

TARGET

InterPositive LLC

Los Angeles, CA-based AI filmmaking technology company co-founded in 2022 by Ben Affleck (Oscar-winning director, writer, actor, producer) and backed by RedBird Capital Partners. Stealth operation for ~3 years. Core product: a project-specific AI post-production system that trains a bespoke model on a production's own dailies, enabling continuity corrections, stunt wire removal, shot reframing, lighting adjustment, background replacement, and visual effects — using only first-party footage (avoiding IP/consent risks). First external user: director David Fincher (upcoming film starring Brad Pitt). 16-person team of engineers, researchers, and creatives.

DEAL OVERVIEW

Netflix announced and closed the acquisition of InterPositive on March 5, 2026. While Netflix did not publicly disclose the financial terms, Bloomberg subsequently reported (citing sources familiar with the matter) that the total consideration could be as much as $600 million — comprising an upfront cash payment (less than $600M) plus additional earn-out payments tied to performance targets. The entire 16-person InterPositive team joined Netflix, and Affleck joined as Senior Advisor.

InterPositive was founded in secret in 2022. Affleck began soliciting investment in 2025 after meeting with several venture capital firms and Hollywood studios. Netflix saw the technology as a potential in-house production tool and moved to acquire rather than license or partner. Netflix has stated it does not plan to commercialize InterPositive's technology externally — it will be available to Netflix's creative partners but not sold as a standalone product.

"We wanted to preserve what makes human storytelling human: judgment. InterPositive is built by filmmakers for filmmakers. I couldn't be happier for this work to continue with the team at Netflix."

— Ben Affleck, Co-Founder, InterPositive

WHY THIS DEAL MATTERS

InterPositive's key technical differentiator is its first-party training architecture: instead of using third-party datasets (which raises IP and consent issues that have plagued generative AI in entertainment), the platform trains exclusively on footage from the production being worked on. The model has no knowledge of any other film or content — it is purpose-built for a single production. This approach sidesteps the legal minefield that has led to multiple lawsuits against generative AI companies for training on copyrighted material.

Director David Fincher's use of InterPositive on an upcoming film before the Netflix acquisition validates the technology at the premium end of the market — the segment where post-production decisions are scrutinized most intensely. Netflix's CCO Bela Bajaria described it as giving creative partners "more choices, more control, and more protection for their vision."

ADVISORS

No financial advisors were disclosed for either party. The deal appears to have been negotiated directly between Netflix and InterPositive following Affleck's 2025 fundraising conversations with the broader entertainment industry.
