Micron Closes $1.8B Acquisition of PSMC's P5 Fab in Taiwan, Accelerating Its AI Memory Supercycle Play

The Boise-based memory giant completes the fastest large semiconductor facility acquisition on record: from LOI signing to full ownership in 57 days. The 300,000 sq ft Tongluo cleanroom — located just 15 miles from Micron's Taichung mega-campus — gives it brownfield DRAM capacity years ahead of any greenfield alternative, aimed squarely at the AI HBM supercycle.

THE PARTIES

ACQUIRER / LEAD INVESTOR

Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: MU)

Boise, ID-based global memory and storage leader. One of three major global HBM suppliers alongside Samsung and SK Hynix. Q1 FY2026 EPS: $4.60 (+175% YoY). Data centre revenue: ~$5.3B in last quarter (doubling YoY). HBM4E chip already fully sold out for 2026. Investing $200B+ in U.S. manufacturing (New York megafab, Idaho ID1 fab, Virginia expansion). CEO Sanjay Mehrotra describes AI memory as "the defining infrastructure bottleneck of the decade."

SELLER

PSMC (Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp.)

Taiwan-based semiconductor foundry and memory manufacturer. Operating the Tongluo, Miaoli County P5 fabrication site being sold to Micron for $1.8B. Post-close: PSMC will relocate its Tongluo operations to other facilities over an agreed timeline. Under the strategic partnership dimension of the deal, Micron will also license a 1Y nm DRAM process to PSMC — enabling PSMC to upgrade its legacy DRAM capabilities — and PSMC will handle post-wafer assembly services for Micron.

DEAL OVERVIEW

Micron signed an exclusive Letter of Intent on January 17, 2026 to acquire PSMC's P5 fabrication site in Tongluo, Taiwan for $1.8 billion in cash. The acquisition was completed on March 15, 2026 — remarkably quickly for a semiconductor facility transaction of this size. Upon closing, Micron assumed full ownership and control of the site and immediately began preparations for cleanroom retrofitting.

The P5 site includes approximately 300,000 square feet of existing 300mm cleanroom space. Micron began retrofitting in March 2026 to configure the cleanroom for its proprietary advanced DRAM process nodes. Meaningful DRAM wafer output from the site is expected beginning in fiscal year 2028. Additionally, Micron announced plans to begin construction of a second facility at the same Tongluo site by the end of fiscal 2026 — adding approximately 270,000 additional square feet of cleanroom space.

"Memory is a strategic asset that dictates AI product performance. The acquisition and phased ramp of this site strengthens our ability to capitalize on the significant opportunities in front of us."

— Manish Bhatia, EVP Global Operations, Micron Technology

STRATEGIC RATIONALE

Brownfield vs. greenfield: a greenfield semiconductor fab requires three to five years from groundbreaking to first wafer output. The Tongluo P5 site, with its existing 300mm cleanroom infrastructure already built and proven, compresses that timeline by two to three years — critical in a market where memory supply is the "defining bottleneck" for AI infrastructure build-out (per Jensen Huang's personal video message congratulating Micron on the expanded NVIDIA-Vast Data collaboration, released the same week as this acquisition close).

The acquisition fits into Micron's $200B+ U.S. and global expansion roadmap: the company is simultaneously breaking ground on a $100B+ New York megafab, ramping the Idaho ID1 fab, and expanding its Singapore and Japan facilities. The Tongluo site adds Taiwan-based capacity specifically positioned for leading-edge DRAM and HBM — the products in tightest supply globally, as AI accelerator demand outpaces memory production capacity.

ADVISORS

No financial advisors were disclosed for either party. The rapid LOI-to-close timeline (57 days) suggests the transaction was negotiated directly between the two companies, given the pre-existing manufacturing relationship between Micron and PSMC in Taiwan.
