Syneron Bio Closes $150M Series B —
Guangzhou's AI-Powered Macrocyclic Peptide Platform Backed by ADIA, Temasek,
and AstraZeneca
One of the most sophisticated biotech investor syndicates ever
assembled for a Chinese startup: Guangzhou-based Syneron Bio closes a $150
million Series B for its Synova macrocyclic peptide AI-drug-discovery platform
— backed by sovereign wealth funds from Abu Dhabi (ADIA) and Singapore (Temasek
via True Light Capital), global strategic partner AstraZeneca, and leading
global life sciences VCs — just four months after its $100M Series A.

Life Science Fund + Decheng Capital + CDH VGC + ADIA + Temasek (True Light
Capital) + More Lead: an
unnamed "international life sciences fund" (undisclosed per company
preference). Co-leads: Decheng Capital (leading life sciences VC, US-China
crossover) and CDH VGC (venture arm of CDH Investments, one of China's
largest PE firms). Additional new investors: subsidiary of Abu Dhabi
Investment Authority (ADIA) — one of the world's largest sovereign wealth
funds; True Light Capital (an independent wholly-owned subsidiary of Temasek,
Singapore's sovereign wealth fund); Qiming Venture Partners; BioTrack
Capital. Existing reinvesting investors: AstraZeneca (strategic pharma
partner), LAV (Lilly Asia Ventures), Sinovation Capital, 5Y Capital, GL
Ventures, Biotech Development Fund, Lenovo Capital. |
COMPANY / RECIPIENT Syneron Bio (Guangzhou,
China) Guangzhou,
China-based AI-powered drug discovery company. Founder and CEO: Dr. Frank
Zhang (also identified as Xiao Zhang in some company materials — a
discrepancy flagged by analysts). Founded 2022. Core technology: Synova — a
proprietary high-throughput, AI-driven macrocyclic peptide discovery platform
that uses machine learning to design, screen, and optimize macrocyclic
peptide therapeutic candidates. Macrocyclic peptides are increasingly called
a "goldilocks" drug class: small enough to be cell-permeable
(unlike large biologics) but large enough to hit the "undruggable"
protein-protein interaction targets that small molecules cannot engage. 230+
pipeline programs disclosed. AstraZeneca collaboration: multi-billion
biobucks deal signed March 2025 for chronic disease macrocyclic peptide
development. |
DEAL OVERVIEW
Syneron Bio
closed its $150 million Series B on March 31, 2026, announcing the completion
publicly on April 3, 2026. The round follows an approximately $100 million
Series A-and-A+ fundraise from December 2025 — meaning Syneron has raised $250
million in under four months. The speed and scale of successive rounds reflects
both the exceptional investor appetite for AI-accelerated drug discovery
platforms and the validation of the AstraZeneca collaboration signed in March
2025 (a multi-year, multi-billion-in-potential-biobucks partnership to develop
macrocyclic peptides for chronic diseases including autoimmune, rare, and
metabolic conditions).
The investor
composition is remarkably global: Abu Dhabi (ADIA), Singapore (Temasek/True
Light Capital), and strategic pharma (AstraZeneca) alongside leading Chinese
and US crossover biotech VCs. This international sovereign wealth backing is
unusual for a two-year-old Chinese biotech, and signals confidence both in the
scientific platform and in Syneron's ability to develop assets for global
regulatory pathways (NMPA China + FDA US). Proceeds will advance multiple
pipeline programs toward IND-enabling studies with the goal of first human
trials in oncology and autoimmune disease.
"This financing further strengthens our cash position, enabling
us to accelerate the development of multiple core pipeline programs across
oncology, autoimmune, metabolic, and rare diseases, with the goal of benefiting
patients worldwide."
— Dr. Frank
Zhang, Founder & CEO, Syneron Bio
WHY MACROCYCLIC PEPTIDES ARE THE HOTTEST
DRUG CLASS OF 2026
Macrocyclic
peptides occupy a strategically valuable chemical space between small molecules
(pills, orally bioavailable, low manufacturing cost, but limited to
"druggable" targets) and biologics (antibodies, large proteins —
potent but require injection, expensive to manufacture, and often immunogenic).
Macrocyclics can engage the same "undruggable" protein-protein
interactions as biologics, while their cyclic structure gives them improved
metabolic stability and the potential — critically — for oral bioavailability.
The market
validation for macrocyclics is accelerating: in February 2026, Novartis signed
a $1.7B+ deal with Unnatural Products to develop macrocyclic peptides for
cardiovascular disease. AstraZeneca's collaboration with Syneron (March 2025)
was one of the largest such arrangements in Asia-Pacific. The
"goldilocks" positioning — potent on tough targets, more
manufacturable than biologics, potentially oral — has created a global
land-grab among pharma majors to secure access to the best AI-powered
macrocyclic peptide platforms.
