Via Separations Raises $36M — Aramco
Ventures and Marathon Petroleum Back the Graphene-Oxide Membrane That Cuts
Industrial Energy Use by 90%
A breakthrough industrial decarbonization technology reaches its
commercial inflection point: Watertown, MA-based Via Separations closes a $36
million round backed by Aramco Ventures, Climate Investment, and Marathon
Petroleum Corporation to accelerate deployment of its graphene-oxide membrane
filtration platform — which replaces energy-intensive thermal separation
(distillation, evaporation) with a mechanically driven process using up to 90%
less energy — into the much larger refining and chemicals markets.

Investment (CI): independently managed specialist investor focused on
industrial decarbonization. Aramco Ventures: the venture and growth
investment arm of Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil company, with a focus
on energy transition technologies that can deliver operational value within
existing industrial assets. Tibor Toth (Senior Investment Director, Aramco
Ventures): "Via Separations' modular platform addresses a critical step
in industrial processing." Marathon Petroleum Corporation: major US
refining company (approximately 13% of US refining capacity); strategic
investor signaling interest in deploying Via's membranes across its own
refining operations. Existing investors: Embark Ventures, The Grantham
Foundation for the Protection of the Environment, Massachusetts Clean Energy
Center (MassCEC), and Safar Partners. |
COMPANY / RECIPIENT Via Separations, Inc. Watertown,
MA-based industrial membrane technology company. CEO Shreya Dave. Spun out of
MIT. Founded 2016. Core technology: graphene oxide (GO) membranes that
replace heat-based industrial separation processes (evaporation,
distillation, crystallization) with mechanically driven filtration — working
like a highly selective physical filter rather than a thermal process. Key
metrics: up to 90% energy reduction at the separation step; lower operating
costs; higher uptime; modular and integrates with existing industrial
equipment (no greenfield requirement). Commercial track record: proven in
pulp and paper manufacturing, with a commercial pipeline of hundreds of
millions of dollars across refining and chemicals. GO membranes: chemically
stable at high temperatures and in corrosive environments where polymer
membranes fail. |
DEAL OVERVIEW
Via Separations
closed a $36 million funding round on April 1, 2026, with new strategic
investment from Climate Investment, Aramco Ventures, and Marathon Petroleum
Corporation — alongside continued support from existing backers. The capital
will accelerate three priorities: (1) commercial project deployment — scaling
from the pulp and paper sector into refining and chemicals, where the
addressable market is orders of magnitude larger; (2) manufacturing capacity
expansion — scaling graphene oxide membrane production to meet growing
commercial demand; (3) global adoption acceleration — with particular focus on
Middle Eastern and European industrial markets where energy cost reduction and
emissions compliance are simultaneously urgent.
Via's membrane
technology works, in CEO Shreya Dave's words, "like a coffee filter or
pasta strainer — but for chemicals." The graphene oxide material is
extraordinarily stable in industrial conditions (high temperature, corrosive
process streams, high pressure) where conventional polymer membranes fail
within days or weeks. Via's membranes have demonstrated operational lifetimes
exceeding one year in commercial pulp and paper deployments — long enough to
generate the economic proof of concept that industrial operators require before
committing to capital projects. The refining and chemicals market represents a
dramatically larger opportunity: global refining alone spends approximately
$100 billion annually on separation processes.
"By proving our technology commercially in one sector, we've
built the foundation to scale into the much larger refining and chemicals
markets. This investment enables us to deliver more commercial projects, expand
manufacturing capacity, and accelerate global adoption of membrane-based
separations."
— Shreya Dave,
CEO, Via Separations
WHY INDUSTRIAL SEPARATION IS THE HIDDEN
GIANT OF DECARBONIZATION
Industrial
separation processes — distillation, evaporation, crystallization — account for
approximately 10-15% of total US industrial energy consumption, making them one
of the largest single categories of industrial carbon emissions. Distillation
columns in chemical plants and refineries have barely changed technically since
the mid-20th century and run 24/7 consuming enormous quantities of steam and
electricity. The reason they persist despite their inefficiency is their
extreme reliability and industry familiarity — replacement requires a proven
alternative that works within existing plant infrastructure without lengthy
shutdowns. Via's modular membrane system is designed to retrofit directly into
existing equipment, requiring minimal capital expenditure and no production
downtime for installation.
